Born This Way

Born This Way - Poppy Dennison 4 Stars

Shifter romances normally aren’t my thing. The whole concept of insta-love because of some supernatural mating bond will turn me off a book completely. I’m happy to say that Poppy Dennison didn’t go down that route. While the concept of ‘mates’ still exists in this book, the character of Dayton doesn’t instantly fall for Hart. Sure, he finds him attractive—and who wouldn’t?—but Hart has to work for the relationship. For me, this added more credibility to the pairing, and I was more invested in them because of it.

The characters were fun, and believable. It was refreshing to read a book where both men aren’t having sex every other page, and also they don’t lay it on thick with the pet-names. Hart does use them from time to time, however they’re used sparingly enough that it doesn’t make him seem overly sappy.

Another thing I liked is that the were-pride in this story actually plays a part in the overall plot. The pride’s politics comes into play a few times, making them more than just a plot device to explain away the instant attraction. And as for the plot itself, it focuses mainly on the building relationship between the two men. There are not a lot of action scenes, but the story moves along at a comfortable pace, and before you know it the book is over.

Overall, this is a cute, short story that is well written, and different enough to the metric fuckton of human-shifter romances out there. My only real criticism is that it was over very quickly. But, oh well, we can’t have everything.
